In Guatemala, USAID’s Democracy and Governance work entails a focus on citizen security and response to the rising levels of crime and violence that the country has witnessed over the past decade.  At the local level, USAID activities focus on reducing vulnerability of at-risk communities, strengthening community policing, and increasing civic responsibility.

USAID's Democracy and Governance program in Guatemala works in close collaboration with the Government of Guatemala, civil society organizations, and implementing partners to:

  • Ensure accountability of government;
  • Increase responsiveness by local governments to citizens' needs;
  • Increase opportunities for citizen participation in and oversight of government decision-making;
  • Improve accountability and efficiency of judicial processes;
  • Enhance effectiveness of crime prevention programs;
  • Increase use of alternative dispute resolution mechanisms; and
  • Improve prosecution of corruption cases.
