USAID/El Salvador has been at the forefront of responding to both natural and manmade disasters.  From the disastrous effects of Hurricane Mitch in 1998, to the earthquakes in 2001, to flooding from Tropical Storm Stan in 2005, USAID has played a key role in providing disaster relief to the people of El Salvador.

Why Our Work Matters…

Every year, droughts, floods, hurricanes, and other natural disasters affect millions of people around the world, and millions of other people are in need of emergency food aid.  USAID focuses on crisis prevention, response, recovery and transition to strengthen resilience, mitigate the impact of disasters, and save lives.

This result is part of the Central America Regional Security Initiative, an inter-agency program that is managed in Washington. This work helps ensure full respect for the rights of the individual and communities in accordance with the letter and the spirit of the relevant bodies of law (international humanitarian, human rights, and refugee law). This involves both legal and practical approaches for implementation in humanitarian situations, including efforts to ensure humanitarian access, incorporate protection strategies in assistance programming and other measures to reduce vulnerability and uphold human dignity for all victims of conflict and disasters.

1 bridge rebuilt

Many bridges were damaged after Tropical Storm Ida in 2009. USAID works with the Government of El Salvador to reconstruct the damaged bridges which are critical for trade and the economy. 
1 design for damaged structures completed

Following Tropical Storm Ida in 2009, many structures were damaged. These structures include schools, health clinics and other important facilities. In partnership with the Government of El Salvador, USAID works toward the reconstruction and rehabilitation of of these structures throughout the country.
