•  March 2013 - OSTI Using Semantic Search in New SciTech Connect Product

SciTech Connect, is a new portal to free, publicly available U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) research and development results.  SciTech Connect incorporates the contents of two of the most popular core DOE collection and employs an innovative semantic search tool enabling scientists, researchers and the scientifically-attentive public to retrieve more relevant information.  OSTI developed this new resource to help increase access to science, technology and engineering research information from DOE and its predecessor agencies.  SciTech Connect represents one of the largest deployments of semantic search by a federal agency to date.   Read more at the press release announcement.

•  February 2013 - Introducing the National Library of Energy^Beta

The Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) has launched the National Library of Energy^Beta (NLE), a virtual library and open government resource to advance energy literacy, innovation and security.

The NLE search feature provides one-stop, easy access to information about DOE and its work in four broad mission areas - science and R&D results; energy and technology for industry and homeowners; energy market information and analysis; and nuclear security and environmental management.

•  December 2012 - Science.gov Celebrates 10th Anniversary

Science.gov, known for its groundbreaking search and retrieval of government science information, celebrated its 10th Anniversary. Through federated one-stop search of U.S. government science information, the portal offers free access to research and development results from 17 organizations within 13 federal science agencies.  Science.gov was the first government science search engine to rank results for relevancy in real time and was a pioneer in precision searching across full-text documents. In addition, over the past 10 years the number of pages available at Science.gov has grown from 47 million to over 200 million; the number of scientific databases made accessible has increased by 30 percent; and the annual page views now top 34 million, a 45-fold increase from the earliest days.

Science.gov continues to grow and evolve to serve users even better. This year alone, Science.gov added multimedia content, an updated interface with enhanced navigation, visual representations of topical information in an easy-to-use touch and dial format.

2011

•  September 2011 - Science.gov goes Mobile

  A Science.gov mobile version m.science.gov has been launched allowing users to search Science.gov resources from Android, Blackberry and iPhone mobile phones. Results from over 50 databases and more than 2100 selected websites can be accessed. This application was made available from the Science.gov Alliance, a collaboration of 14 federal agencies offering 200 million pages of authoritative U.S. government science information and R&D via the one-stop Science.gov search engine.

• August 2011 – OSTI Assigns First DOI as DataCite Member

  Researchers funded by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) can now make their scientific research data easier to cite and easier to find from worldwide sources. OSTI, within the Office of Science, became a member of DataCite in January 2011 to facilitate access to DOE datasets. Through this membership, OSTI assigns permanent identifiers, known as Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs), to the individual datasets to aid in citation, discovery, and retrieval. Creating stable pathways to these datasets makes the scientific process more accessible and the research more replicable for future discoveries.
  
  OSTI Director Walter Warnick said, “This service yields easier access and identification of scientific research datasets produced by DOE-funded researchers so that they can be readily found and cited with confidence.”

• July 2011 – Multimedia Added to a Federated Search

  WorldWideScience.org has added a new multimedia search capability, including search of speech-indexed scientific videos from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) and CERN. Speech-indexing is provided by the Microsoft Research Audio Video Indexing System (MAVIS).

• June 2011 – WorldWideScience.org Goes Mobile

  A mobile version of WorldWideScience.org (http://m.worldwidescience.org) has been launched, which will mark another first in the field of federated search. This enhancement builds on WorldWideScience.org’s history of innovation in combining information and search technologies with a commitment to accelerate scientific discovery. This commitment is shared by the multilateral WorldWideScience Alliance, comprised of globally-dispersed national and international scientific and technical information organizations.

• May 2011 – OSTI.gov Goes Mobile

  OSTI mobile http://m.osti.gov/, the mobile application that previously searched Information Bridge, has been upgraded. Now Android, Blackberry or iPhone will show results from a number of OSTI Databases, including Energy Citations Database, Information Bridge, ScienceCinema, DOepatents and DOE Green Energy. Search by document type including multimedia and standard options, download and email results. Get the OSTIblog, twitter, Facebook, videos, and news.

• February 2011 – ScienceCinema Launched

  Scientific videos highlighting the most exciting research and development sponsored by the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) were made available through ScienceCinema. It is anticipated that scientific videos, animations, interactive visualizations, and other multimedia will become an increasingly prominent form of scientific communications. ScienceCinema uses innovative, state-of-the-art audio indexing and speech recognition technology from Microsoft Research to allow users to quickly find video files produced by the DOE National Laboratories and other DOE research facilities.

   

• January 2011 – OSTI becomes DataCite Member

  OSTI joined DataCite to facilitate finding, accessing and reusing publicly available scientific research datasets produced by U.S. Department of Energy (DOE)-funded researchers. Digital Object Identifiers (DOIs) are assigned to research datasets, then registered with DataCite to establish persistence. When registered, these datasets are announced with other forms of STI made available by OSTI as part of its mission to advance science.

   

  Registering DOIs is a service OSTI is providing to the DOE-funded researchers at DOE national laboratories, facilities, and grantees at universities and other institutions.

   

• January 2011 – Science.gov Debuts Image Search

  Science.gov made science images easy to find through its free federated image search. Initially, three databases are being searched from one search box:

• • The U.S. Geological Survey National Biological Information Infrastructure (NBII) Library of Images from the Environment (LIFE), a collection of high-quality photographs, illustrations, and graphics covering a wide range of topics, including images of plants, animals, fungi, microorganisms, habitats, wildlife management, environmental topics, and biological study/fieldwork. 

  • The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA ) Image eXchange (NIX), a search engine of NASA's multimedia collections, including images of space flight wind tunnel, solar system, aircraft, and education initiatives.

  • The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration Photo Library (NOAA), a collection spanning centuries of time and much of the natural world from the center of the earth to the surface of the sun.

2010

• June 2010 – Multilingual WorldWideScience BETA Launched

  Multilingual WorldWideScience.org BETA makes possible real-time searching and translation of globally-dispersed collections of scientific literature. This capability will benefit the English-speaking science community, enabling searching and translation of non-English sources. It will also benefit native speakers of other major languages (Chinese, French, German, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish, and Russian) by translating search results into the user's language of choice.

• April 2010 – DOE Green Energy Launched

  Launched on the 40th Anniversary of Earth Day, this portal provides technical documents from thousands of R&D projects conducted at DOE National Laboratories and by DOE-funded awards at universities. The DOE Green Energy portal is part of the DOE Open Government Plan, which furthers the Administration’s Open Government Initiative. It contains bibliographic citations, technical reports and patent information on different types of renewable energy resources and energy conservation, including solar, wind, bioenergy, hydroelectric, geothermal, tidal and wave power, and energy storage.

• April 2010 – Community College Connections Launched

  Community College Connections spotlights community colleges across the nation committed to supporting and advancing science. The page is linked from the OSTI .EDUconnections website which connects university libraries and research departments to valuable DOE scientific research.

• March 2010 – High Value Datasets

  As part of the Administration-wide Open Gov Initiative, OSTI is contributing various tools and data sets that have been developed as part of its DOE program mission, making R&D results transparent and easily accessible by the scientific community and the public. The five high value data sets from the Office of Scientific and Technical Information (OSTI) include DOE Research and Development Project Summaries data services), Energy Citations Database data services), Information Bridge data services), Geothermal/Geothermal Legacy Data (data service), and DOE Patents Database (data services). These tools have made DOE R&D results more transparent and have made scientific information access more convenient than ever before.
