The leadership and employees of the Social Security Administration are excited to commemorate the August 14, 1935, signing of the Social Security Act. Acting Commissioner Carolyn W. Colvin announced the launch of the agency’s event-filled 80th anniversary celebration, with many activities leading up to August 14.
“Social Security offers hope and protection for millions of people and some of the most vulnerable members of the American public,” Acting Commissioner Colvin said. “This was President Franklin Roosevelt’s vision in 1935, and the vision has never been clearer, nor has the work of our agency ever been more important than it is today.”
Observing this milestone wouldn’t be complete without your participation. Social Security launched a commemorative 80th anniversary website, where you can learn more about the legacy and the importance of the Social Security program and submit your own story about how Social Security has helped you or your family.
And, while you’re on our website, be sure to sign up for your personal “my Social Security” account. You can track the history of your earnings and the Social Security and Medicare taxes you paid, and find out how much you might be eligible to receive from Social Security when the time comes. If you already get benefits, you can use your “my Social Security” account to manage them.
