ALASKA OIL AND GAS LEASE SALES

In May 1999, the BLM held its first lease sale in the National Petroleum Reserve-Alaska (NPR-A) since 1984 offering nearly 3.9 million acres within the Northeast Planning Area. Since 1999 the BLM has since held lease sales in both the Northwest (NW) and Northeast (NE) Planning Areas.

On May 14, 2011, President Obama directed the Department of the Interior to conduct annual oil and gas lease sales in the NPR-A. On May 17, 2011, Interior Secretary Salazar affirmed this commitment in a statement before the Senate Committee on Energy and Natual Resources.

A new Record of Decision was signed in February, 2013 for the entire NPR-A which allowed for tracts to be offered in the southern area of NPR-A. The 2014 deferral in the far west has expired and tracts have been created for that area.
