Check Out Our Home Page Redesign!

Social Security Home PageThis week, we unveiled our newly redesigned home page. Changes in technology allow web developers to make websites more user-friendly, to adapt to the needs of customers navigating through the pages.

When you visit our home page, you’ll find that it’s easier to navigate and more accessible on mobile devices. The single-page look is eye-pleasing and informative.

We redesigned our home page based on your feedback. The top suggestion we received was to list all of our content on one page. We worked very hard to redesign our home page based on your suggestions.

The new home page is now easier to use on mobile devices. Everything on the home page is accessible regardless of the browser used to access our site.

We earned the “ClearMark Award of Distinction” from the Center for Plain Language for demonstrating the best plain language websites and documents in 2014. This year, we won the “ClearMark Award of Distinction” for our redesigned Frequently Asked Questions website. With this redesigned home page, we continue to improve our communications to provide you with clear, helpful information and easy access to our online services.

Visit our new home page to quickly find the information you need and access our top-rated online services.

  1. All the work for online access and email dispatches is great, helpful to me as a retired SSA DM and to the general public. Thanks so much.

    • Hi John, we appreciate your comments – thanks! P.S. Hope you’re enjoying retirement!

  2. I am very happy to be able to get this information,on things that are important in my life to know, thank you so very mush.I’m a senior on a FIXD INCOME.

  3. Thanks for putting in the effort to create a clean-looking, efficient and easy to navigate website. The blogging page is also a very helpful service to the public. Thanks, again,

    • Thanks for the feedback, Anselmo – glad you like our new home page and blog!

  4. I did not see the new redesign thing but bet it’s look nice because everybody said so, can I use it on my wall over on my sociali security account. Thank you.

  5. It looks much better than the previous one, but I’m going to have to check it more carefully; it’s harder to find forms on it. You can get what you want with ‘search’ but I wish there was a link on the first page
The new appeal form is much improved.

    • Hi Margaret. You can get the forms you need quickly and easy on our new home page. Go to our special “Items of Interest” section near the bottom of the page, and then choose the Forms box. All forms are free, but not all forms are listed. If you can’t find the form you need, or need help completing a form, please call us at 1-800-772-1213 for assistance. Representatives are available Monday through Friday between 7 a.m. and 7 p.m.

  6. I signed up for email alerts from ssa.gov, but the emails you send automatically get sent to the spam folder by Gmail! While I can adjust my Gmail account to prevent this, I suspect much of your clientele would not know how to do this. Gmail is probably the largest publically available email client, so SSA might wish to make contact with them & ask that they please modify their program’s behavior to prevent subscription emails from ssa.gov from being automatically sent to spam. Thanks.

    • Thanks so much for the feedback! We’re working with our vendor to try to correct this problem.

    • That is an excellent suggestion on spam and gmail accounts and as the old adage goes sharing is caring.

  7. I paid SS over 45 years and now am told because my wife is Filipino citizen she cannot draw on my Social Security that came out of my pay check over the 45 years, but my prior wife who was a alcoholic, gambler, and had a child by another man would have been eligble to draw on my social social security!!! WHAT IS WRONG WITH THIS SENARIO. My current wife is going to beautician school and planning to open a beauty shop and is partner in a business. The alcoholic cheater could draw on my social social security and my great wife because she is Filipino Citizen cannot. WOW GOOD GOING GOVERNMENT!!!!

    • Your situation is complicated, but most likely your current wife has not been able to show SSA she is legally present in the U.S. Alternately, you may be permanently residing in the Philippines, where spousal benefits for your wife as a non-U.S. citizen are more difficult to get (see http://www.ssa.gov/multilanguage/10146-GM.pdf ). Otherwise, your wife would not be denied for being a Filipino citizen.

Yes, it is true your first wife might be able to draw too, but SSA calculates spouse’s benefits in a way that prevents one spouse’s entitlement from affecting the other. Both could conceivably collect equal amounts without any reduction occurring to the other.

The real problem here is not SSA’s entitlement rules, but rather the fact that you allowed your first marriage to last ten years – which is what it takes for the law to allow her to potentially collect SSA benefits from your work record. 🙂

Seriously, in the past, oftentimes the man hired a lawyer to handle the divorce and the woman did not hire one for herself. Many men in this position enjoyed a revengeful last financial shot at the woman by finalizing the divorce at 9 years 11 months – & knowing the woman would later learn that this meant she just missed out on being to collect SSA spousal benefits. Hopefully this will occur less often now that information is more readily available on the Internet, including on socialsecurity.gov .

    • David, your wife could get benefits as long as she meets the requirements for non-citizens living in the United States. If you and your wife live outside the United States, she may have to meet additional requirements, and you should contact the nearest U.S. Embassy or consulate for further assistance. Also, the amount of benefits your divorced spouse gets has no effect on the amount of benefits you receive now, or the benefits your current spouse may receive. For specific questions, please call our toll free number, 1-800-772-1213 (TTY 1-800-325-0778) and ask to speak with one of our representatives, who are available Monday through Friday between 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m.

  8. i called my locall social securty office to find out how much my next ssi check was going to be for and they hung up on me. those fools

    • Tar’rellis, we are very sorry to hear you did not receive the level of customer service you expected. For your security, we do not have access to personal information in this venue. However, your benefit verification letter will show you how much your SSI check will be. You can view, print, and save your benefit verification letter by creating or using your my Social Security account. Or, you can visit your local office for assistance.

  9. Looks good! Nice big icons that folks can see and understand now. The easier it it looks, the better chance we will have to get the “Baby Boomers” to sign up. I help my In-law’s and thier friends a lot regarding issues on the Web. Trust me, make a Website easy to understand, and they will log on. Make it too busy – not a chance.

  10. A recent TV news show (I wish I could remember the name) had a piece on the million of dollars of SS funds being received by non eligible family members of deceased SS recipients. (some recipients were over 100 years old) Does SS have a system of periodic review to check on this huge illegal loss of Social Security funds?
    Thx

    • Robert, we actively investigate allegations of fraud, and encourage anyone who suspects fraud to report it online or call (800) 269-0271 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Eastern Time, Monday through Friday. In addition, Social Security regularly conducts quality assurance and performance reviews to make sure decisions and payments are correct for people applying for and receiving benefits. These quality assurance reviews happen along each step of the way, from initial decisions to the processing of appeals. It’s another way we strive to make sure we pay the right person, the right amount, at the right time.

  11. i would can my husband get start socail searcuity benefcate and medical and medicare and get medical from socail searcuity office beneficate now or he has to wait unstill 66 yrs old

    • Thanks for your question. If your husband is already getting Social Security retirement benefits, he will be enrolled in Medicare Parts A and B automatically. However, because he must pay a premium for Part B coverage, he has the option of turning it down. If your husband is not already getting retirement benefits, he should contact us about three months before his 65th birthday to sign up for Medicare. If he is still working and is covered under a group health plan based on that employment, he may want to file for Medicare Part A (Hospital Insurance) only. However, he should speak to his personnel office, health benefits advisor, or health plan to see what’s best for him. Your husband can apply for Medicare online.

  12. Your home page looks good, easier to read. One comment if I may. Social Security should be for those folks that have paid into it. Please don’t start making special programs that will be paid from Social Security. If I want something extra then I can pay for it out of my Social Security check. Keep Social Security from becoming bankrupt like our government. Please!

  13. Admiring the time and effort you put into your blog and in depth information you present. It’s great to come across a blog every once in a while that isn’t the same old rehashed information. Fantastic read! I’ve saved your site and I’m including your RSS feeds to my Google account.
