U.S. Coast Guard SAR Statistics

The information presented represents only those incidents reported to the Coast Guard. The Coast Guard does not maintain a record of incidents where assistance is provided without Coast Guard involvement.

Statistics

Scope

Beginning with  Fiscal Year (FY) 2003, SAR data is entered in the Marine Information for Safety and Law Enforcement (MISLE) database.  FY2000 through 2002 data was entered in SARMIS II, while data prior to FY2000 data was entered under the SARMIS system.  Data collection within MISLE provides more accurate and timely information.

The statistical summary represents data reported by U.S. Coast Guard operating facilities that conducted or coordinated Search and Rescue (SAR) operations during the specified Fiscal Year (FY). The data covers those reported SAR incidents which occurred within the Maritime SAR Region, including those inland waters of the United States under joint or Federal jurisdiction. Also included are those cases within the Inland and/or Overseas SAR Regions where responsible SAR authorities requested Coast Guard assistance.

The information  is not intended to be an all-inclusive description of the SAR effort, but rather an attempt to display and present some of the more significant statistics associated with the SAR Program.

Statistics were generated from data in the computerized SAR database. The selection of statistics to display  is based on the frequency of past use of SAR data. Emphasis has been placed on those statistics which are most helpful in measuring SAR Program effectiveness. The statistics encompass the entire Coast Guard SAR effort including the Coast Guard Auxiliary.
