ICCVAM and its supporting center, NICEATM (the National Toxicology Program Interagency Center for the Evaluation of Alternative Toxicological Methods), coordinate the development, validation, acceptance, and harmonization of alternative toxicological test methods throughout the United States Federal government.

Hosted by the European Union's Joint Research Centre, Institute for Health and Consumer Protection (IHCP), this reference laboratory focuses on the development and scientific and regulatory acceptance of alternative testing methods aimed at replacing, reducing or refining the use of laboratory animals. In 2011, the tasks previously assigned to ECVAM (the European Centre for the Validation of Alternative Methods) were moved to EURL ECVAM.
Promotes the 3Rs in animal experiments for the evaluation of chemical substance safety in Japan.
