Office of Minority Health

The Affordable Care Act (ACA) required the establishment of Offices of Minority Health within six agencies of the Department of Health and Human Services (HHS): Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS), Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) and Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

CDC and AHRQ previously established such offices administratively and AHRQ had established a senior adviser position on minority health to serve as a focal point for coordinating minority health disparities work in the agency. Both HRSA and AHRQ have elected to keep their current reporting structure, under provisions of the ACA.

These offices join the HHS Office of Minority Health and NIH National Institute on Minority Health and Health Disparities to lead and coordinate activities that improve the health of racial and ethnic minority populations and eliminate health disparities.
