Our ARRIVE (Animal Research: Reporting of In Vivo Experiments) guidelines are intended to improve the reporting of research using animals – maximising information published and minimising unnecessary studies.

The ARRIVE guidelines, originally published in PLOS Biology, were developed in consultation with the scientific community as part of an NC3Rs initiative to improve the standard of reporting of research using animals.

Further information on the project, including the current list of endorsements by scientific journals, funding bodies, universities and learned societies can be found within our Our Science pages.

The ARRIVE checklist is designed to be used when submitting manuscripts describing animal research. To complete the checklist, fill in the right-hand column with the section and paragraph (e.g. ‘Methods, Paragraph 2’) reporting the ARRIVE item. If the checklist item is not applicable to the study being reported, provide a reason for not reporting this information in the right-hand column. A completed checklist can be provided as supplementary information and will help reviewers and editors to ensure the high-quality reporting of animal research.

NOTE: Please ensure that you save the pdf locally on your machine before you fill in the table, DO NOT work on the file within your internet browser as the changes will not be saved. If you are unable to complete the PDF checklist, please download the Word version. An example of a manuscripit using the ARRIVE checklist can be found here.

Latest news

The CAMARADES group are carrying out a randomised controlled study to assess whether mandating the completion of an ARRIVE checklist improves reporting quality. Reviewers are being sought for the study, which involves scoring manuscripts against an operationalised ARRIVE checklist. Reviewers’ names will be included in the resulting papers. Further information available here.

Resources to support the use of the guidelines

  • ARRIVE webinar: 'The ARRIVE guidelines: Improving the design and reporting of animal research to optimize the reproducibility of animal studies', presented by Dr Katie Lidster at the Laboratory Animal Science virtual conference.

  • ARRIVE presentation: A short presentation describing the ARRIVE guidelines can be used to disseminate key information about the guidelines. The presentation is an ideal introduction to the ARRIVE guidelines and explains their development, how they can be used and the benefit of using the guidelines when reporting animal research.

  • Presentation speaker notes: To accompany the presentation, speaker notes include comprehensive guidance to assist the presenter.

  • ARRIVE examples: Specific examples for each point of the ARRIVE guidelines demonstrate how they can be used in practice to report animal research.
