AIDS is not over, but it can be, Huge progress has been made since 2000 and millions of lives have been saved. But there are still important milestones to reach, barriers to break and frontiers to cross. The world has agreed to meet a set of global targets by 2020 as part of UNAIDS Fast-Track strategy to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat.

Prevention gap report

African Union Summit emphasizes focus on young people in Africa
The 28th African Union Summit closed on 1 February with the election of Chad’s Moussa Faki Mahamat as the new chairperson of the African Union Commission. The theme of the summit was “Harnessing the demographic dividend through investing in youth” and strong calls for African solidarity resonated through the summit. In his speech, the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, stated that the United Nations stands as a proud partner of the African Union and will continue to tap into African wisdom, ideas and solutions.Strategy
At the end of 2015, the UNAIDS Programme Coordinating Board adopted a new strategy to end the AIDS epidemic as a public health threat by 2030.

Goals
The Fast-Track Commitments are drawn from the 2016 United Nations Political Declaration on Ending AIDS, which was adopted by United Nations Member States at the 2016 United Nations General Assembly High-Level Meeting on Ending AIDS and the UNAIDS 2016–2021 Strategy.
