NEH is addressing the American public’s need for substantive resources about Muslim beliefs and practices and the rich cultural heritage associated with Islamic civilizations. Through the book collection, which will be distributed to up to 1,000 libraries, public engagement, and a comprehensive website, NEH seeks to promote individual learning, community discussions, and opportunities for greater cross-cultural understanding. Support for this program was provided by a grant from Carnegie Corporation of New York.
The titles included in the bookshelf are selected with the advice of scholars and librarians to help public audiences in the United States become more familiar with the people, places, history, faith, and cultures of Muslims around the world, including those within the U.S. The list will be announced in June, 2012.
Applications for the Muslim Journeys Bookshelf collection development and library programming grant will be available via www.ala.org/programming/muslimjourneys from June 15, 2012 through September 25, 2012.
