Community Health Maps Intern
The Community Health Maps (CHM) project team is working with a student intern from the University Of Maryland, School Of Public Health in conducting a community health project using tools promoted in Community Health Maps blog.
The CHM blog provides information about low cost mapping tools and outreaches these tools to public health communities. These tools include field data collection apps using mobile devices rather than GPS devices, open source free GIS desktop tools and web mapping tools.
Like the CHM target audience, the student intern has no experience with GIS or with these tools. She hopes to analyze road accessibility around Seabury Assisted Living in downtown Silver Spring, MD by collecting the geo-locations of curb cut-outs in a quarter mile range around the facility. Customized maps with curb cut-outs, combined with layers of roads, sidewalks, and grocery stores, as well as selected census data, will be developed. Geo-analysis results will be assembled into an informal ambulation guidance for Seabury Assisted Living seniors. Road construction recommendations may be suitable for submission to local government.
This project has provided CHM with additional experience on promoting its tools and their use in a public health effort.
