U.S.-Chile Trade Facts

In 2019, Chile GDP was an estimated $294.2 billion (current market exchange rates); real GDP was up by an estimated 1.1%; and the population was 19 million. (Source: IMF)

U.S. goods and services trade with Chile totaled an estimated $34.4 billion in 2019. Exports were $21.3 billion; imports were $13.0 billion. The U.S. goods and services trade surplus with Chile was $8.3 billion in 2019.

Chile is currently our 29th largest goods trading partner with $26.1 billion in total (two way) goods trade during 2019. Goods exports totaled $15.7 billion; goods imports totaled $10.4 billion. The U.S. goods trade surplus with Chile was $5.3 billion in 2019.

Trade in services with Chile (exports and imports) totaled an estimated $8.2 billion in 2019. Services exports were $5.6 billion; services imports were $2.6 billion. The U.S. services trade surplus with Chile was $3.0 billion in 2019.

Exports

  • Chile was the United States' 20th largest goods export market in 2019.
  • U.S. goods exports to Chile in 2019 were $15.7 billion, up 2.7% ($416 million) from 2018 and up 68.3% from 2009. U.S. exports to Chile are up 479% from 2003 (pre-FTA).
  • The top export categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: mineral fuels ($5.2 billion), machinery ($2.0 billion), aircraft ($1.3 billion), electrical machinery ($951 million), and vehicles ($929 million).
  • U.S. total exports of agricultural products to Chile totaled $1.0 billion in 2019. Leading domestic export categories include: pork & pork products ($123 million), wine & beer ($106 million), poultry meat & products (ex. eggs) ($90 million), dairy products ($87 million), and feeds & fodders not elsewhere specified or indicated ($84 million).
  • U.S. exports of services to Chile were an estimated $5.6 billion in 2019, 2.6% ($142 million) more than 2018, and 174% greater than 2009 levels. It was up roughly 469% from 2003 (pre-FTA).  Leading services exports from the U.S. to Chile were in the travel, transport, and intellectual property (franchise fees) sectors.

Imports

  • Chile was the United States' 33rd largest supplier of goods imports in 2019.
  • U.S. goods imports from Chile totaled $10.4 billion in 2019, down 8.7% ($992 million) from 2018, but up 75% from 2009. U.S. imports from Chile are up 180% from 2003 (pre-FTA).
  • The top import categories (2-digit HS) in 2019 were: copper ($2.6 billion), fish and seafood (fillet, other fish meat) ($2.6 billion), edible fruit & nuts (grapes,fresh or dried)  ($1.9 billion), wood and wood products ($829 million), and special other (returns) ($388 million).
  • U.S. total imports of agricultural products from Chile totaled $2.8 billion in 2019, our 12th largest supplier of agricultural imports. Leading categories include: other fresh fruit ($1.7 billion), processed fruit & vegetables ($292 million), wine and beer ($238 million), planting seeds ($138 million), and fruit & vegetable juices ($60 million).
  • U.S. imports of services from Chile were an estimated $2.6 billion in 2019, 1.8% ($47 million) more than 2018, and 174% greater than 2009 levels. It was up roughly 464% from 2003 (pre-FTA). Leading services imports from Chile to the U.S. were in the transportation, travel, and technical and other services sectors.

Trade Balance

  • The U.S. goods trade surplus with Chile was $5.3 billion in 2019, a 35.8% increase ($1.4 billion) over 2018.
  • The United States has a services trade surplus of an estimated $3.0 billion with Chile in 2019, up 3.3% from 2018.

Investment

  • U.S. foreign direct investment (FDI) in Chile (stock) was $25.1 billion in 2019, a 3.5% decrease from 2018. U.S. direct investment in Chile is led by mining, finance and insurance, and manufacturing.
  • Chile's FDI in the United States (stock) was $2.9 billion in 2019, up 10.8% from 2018. There is no information on the distribution of Chile FDI in the U.S.
  • Sales of services in Chile by majority U.S.-owned affiliates were $12.0 billion in 2017 (latest data available), while sales of services in the United States by majority Chile-owned firms were $761 million.
