Aquifers: Ground Water Atlas of the United States

The Ground Water Atlas of the United States, USGS Hydrologic Atlas 730 (Miller, 2000), describes the location, hydrologic characteristics, and geologic characteristics of the principal aquifers throughout the 50 States, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. The groundwater information summarized in the Atlas was collected over many years by the USGS and other partner agencies and published in 2000. The Atlas provides key descriptive information in a regional and national context.

Atlas Figures and Maps: Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

Can I get GIS files for the Atlas figures?

No GIS files were published with the Atlas. No GIS files are available for the figures.

GIS files based on the Ground Water Atlas were released of the shallowest principal aquifers of the conterminous United States, Hawaii, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

Refer to recent and ongoing regional groundwater availability studies for more recent geospatial data.

Where can I get the figures from the Atlas?

Figures can be downloaded from the Atlas web site or extracted from the PDF files linked to above.

Can I use the Atlas figures in my publication?

Unless otherwise specified, figures in the Atlas are in the public domain. Refer to USGS policies on copyrights and credits for more information.
