Lifestyle Risk Factors
Chronic diseases, such as heart disease and cancer, are among the most common, costly, and preventable of all health problems in the United States.
Each year, chronic diseases cause 7 of 10 deaths among Americans. Heart disease, cancer, and stroke account for more than 50% of all deaths each year.
When examining chronic diseases and their potential connection to the environment, it is important to consider other health risk factors that could play a role in their development. Four personal behaviors that can affect chronic diseases are:
- lack of physical activity,
- poor nutrition,
- tobacco use, and
- excessive alcohol consumption.
The Tracking Network has data on the percentage of adults who smoke and the percentage of adults who report being overweight or obese.
