Why lotteries?

A lottery system provides a fair distribution process and ensures equal access to the recreation opportunity. Many of these opportunities are in such high demand that access is limited to prevent damage to the natural landscape, and to preserve the visitor experience.

How does a lottery work?

In order to apply for a lottery, you will need to create a Recreation.gov account.

A lottery application period is opened at a designated time for each recreation opportunity (Example: river permit, wilderness permit, etc.), and requires applicants to submit an online or call center application during this timeframe. Those successful lottery winners, as well as the unsuccessful applicants, will be notified following the lottery application period and the lottery. Often, there are additional steps that the successful lottery winners must follow to secure and pay for the reservation. These “next step” instructions are detailed in the confirmation award letters or the “Know Before You Go” section of the permit or lottery Recreation.gov web pages.

For each lottery application there is a transaction fee – whether you are successful or not in securing a reservation through the lottery. If you receive a successful lottery award you will not be required to pay another reservation fee. However, there may also be additional fees associated with the permit or activity.
