Manure Treatment Technologies
Chesapeake Bay Program.
"This report focuses on six broad categories of treatment technologies: Thermochemical Processing, Composting, Anaerobic Digestion, Settling, Mechanical Solid Liquid Separation, and Wet Chemical Treatments. The ability to reduce nitrogen by volatilization and to separate both nitrogen and phosphorous to a stream that is likely to be utilized off-farm is quantified for each technology. Transformation of nutrients to more plant-available forms is also discussed for each technology."

Animal waste, water quality and human health
World Health Organization.
"Domestic animals contaminate recreational waters and drinking-water sources with excreta and pathogens; but this threat to public health is inadequately understood and is insufficiently addressed in regulations..."

Managing Manure to Improve Air and Water Quality
USDA. Economic Research Service.
Assesses the economic and environmental tradeoffs between water quality policies and air quality policies that could require the animal sector to take potentially costly measures to abate pollution, based on economic analyses.

Recommended Methods of Manure Analysis (PDF|1.27 MB)
University of Wisconsin-Extension.
"A reference document for sampling and testing livestock manure, developed by a multi-regional committee."

Manure Management for Water Quality: Costs to Animal Feeding Operations of Applying Manure Nutrients to Land
USDA. Economic Research Service.
"Farm-level analysis examines on-farm technical choice and producer costs."

Manure Nutrients Relative to the Capacity of Cropland and Pastureland to Assimilate Nutrients: Spatial and Temporal Trends for the United States
USDA. USDA. Natural Resource Conservation Service.
"Presents the temporal and spatial changes in the number, size, and kind of livestock operations, and the changes in animal units, quantity of manure nutrients produced, land available for manure application, and excess manure nutrients at both the farm level and the county level."

Readings on Manure Management
USDA. NAL. Water and Agriculture Information Center.
A bibliography of 142 citations from the NAL catalog (AGRICOLA) covering 2000-2001. Prepared for "Animal Residuals 2002: Agricultural Animal Manure Management, Policy and Technology" (May 6-8, 2002).

Confined Animal Production and Manure Nutrients
USDA. Economic Research Service.
"Census of agriculture data were used to estimate manure nutrient production and the capacity of cropland and pastureland to assimilate nutrients." Discusses relationships between manure nutrients produced and land available for application at the county level.

Trends in the Potential for Nutrient Loading from Confined Livestock Operations
USDA. Natural Resource Conservation Service.
"Using farm-level census, presents county estimates of pounds of manure nitrogen and phosphorus potentially generated from confined livestock, and compares these estimates to the potential for nitrogen and phosphorus uptake/removal by crops and application on pastureland."

Animal Feeding Operations
EPA. National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System.
"NPDES program regulates the discharge of pollutants from point sources to waters of the United States. Concentrated Animal Feeding Operations (CAFOs) are point sources, as defined by the CWA [Section 502(14)]."

Agriculture: Nutrient Management and Fertilizer
EPA. Ag 101.
Focuses on the issues of nutrient management and the use of fertilizer.

Animal Waste Management
USDA. NRCS.
Offers software, handbooks, rules, and training and other conservation planning information.

Comprehensive Nutrient Management Planning (CNMP)
USDA. Wisconsin NRCS.
The development of a comprehensive nutrient management planning (CNMP) begins with a comprehensive engineering and conservation planning resource assessment of current site conditions. Management options and structural alternatives are developed to address resource concerns identified during the assessment.

Crop Nutrient Tool
USDA. NCRS. National Plant Data Center.
"A tool for calculating the approximate amount of nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium that is removed by the harvest of agricultural crops."

Animal Agriculture, Manure Management, and Water Quality
eXtension.
"This module is an overview of animal agriculture in the U.S. and how industry trends have affected manure management. Because the primary use of manure is land application as a plant fertilizer, the module addresses nutrient management and surface water quality impacts. The module also covers regulatory requirements and efforts to manage and reduce risks of manure nutrients reaching water."
