NOAA Fisheries 2013 Science Program Reviews: Stock Assessment Data Updated Jan. 2014

HIGH QUALITY SCIENCE is fundamental to NOAA as a science-based agency. NOAA Fisheries conducts objective peer reviews of scientific activities in major programs at its Science Centers on a regular basis using agreed upon criteria. The purpose of the reviews is to maximize the transparency and effectiveness of major science programs located at the six Science Centers as well as those located in or coordinated through NMFS Headquarters.

IN 2013, the focus is on collection, management, and quality of data used for stock assessments. The peer review panel will learn how data used in stock assessments completed by the Alaska Fisheries Science Center are collected and how well these data collection programs are meeting stock assessment needs. The 2013 review will directly inform the 2014 review, which focuses on stock assessment methods and issues such as uncertainty in results, use by managers, and explicit consideration of environmental factors.

To conduct the reviews, we selected experts in the topic area who are not associated with the Alaska Fisheries Science Center. During a week-long review, the panel of reviewers will see presentations and have time to discuss the state of the science with management and staff, take public comments, and prepare their individual review report and recommendations.
