Projects Funded by NIJ Awards

Every year, NIJ awards grants and cooperative agreements for research, development, evaluation, testing and training and technical assistance projects across the spectrum of criminal justice.

We fund projects:

  • In response to competitive solicitations.
  • Under formula award programs (DNA Backlog Reduction Program and the Paul Coverdell Forensic Science Improvement Grants Program[1].
  • As continuations of previously competed awards from past fiscal years.
  • Selected by NIJ and made as non-competitive awards. [2]

[2] NIJ places a high-priority on transparency and fairness and one of NIJ's guiding principles is that government-funded research must adhere to processes of fair and open competition guided by rigorous peer review. However, there are times when making non-competitive awards is necessary. Read NIJ's Policy on Non-Competitive Awards.
