Have You Seen Your Social Security Card Lately?

clip art of a social security cardWe strive to provide you world-class service. With that in mind, Social Security rolled out a new service that allows some of our customers to request a replacement Social Security card online.

The new online version of the Application for a Replacement Social Security Card allows people in some states to request a replacement card online through our secure my Social Security portal without traveling to a field office.

Currently available in the District of Columbia, Michigan, Nebraska, Washington, and Wisconsin, it’s an easy, convenient, and secure way to request a replacement card online. First, you’ll need to create a my Social Security account. When you open a my Social Security account, we protect your information by using strict identity verification and security features. The application process has built-in features to detect fraud and confirm your identity. In certain cases, security experts at Social Security will contact you to ensure it is a legitimate application. We only issue a replacement card if there’s no suspicion of fraud and then we only mail it to a verified address.

To take advantage of this new service option, you must:

  • Have or create a my Social Security account;
  • Have a valid driver’s license in a participating state or the District of Columbia (or a state-issued identification card in some states);
  • Be age 18 or older and a United States citizen with a domestic U.S. mailing address (this includes APO, FPO, and DPO addresses); and
  • Not be requesting a name change or any other changes to your card.

We plan to add more states, so we encourage you to check with us later in the year!

Before you request a replacement card online, you may want to consider whether you need to get a replacement card at all. Most times, knowing your number is what’s important. You’ll rarely need the card itself, perhaps only when you get a new job and have to show it to your employer. If you decide that you do need a replacement card, log into your personal my Social Security account and select “Request a Replacement Card.” Next, answer the screening questions to confirm eligibility, complete personal data, and you’re done!

See how easy that was? For more information, please visit www.socialsecurity.gov/ssnumber.

    • Hey

Floridians! Start a petition right here, right now. Being disabled is no fun and with a bedridden wife makes it nearly impossible to get out. I’ll be first!

  1. Sir
We appreciate your innovative approach in rendering services to the US citizens and residents. We feel proud about it.
    Thanks lot

  2. This is great and I am glad living in Washington, we have this option! I dislike the office e got here; takes about almost all day just to get your card! RIDICULOUS! And I work FT all week, don’t need to take time off from work to spend in an office full of crabby people!

  3. This Service is just one of many that could be handled online I am sure this service comes at a cost, however none were mentioned in article.

    • why DIDN’T my reply to this show up?

      i observed all your rules.

all 50 states should have this done.

ss … please use SHORT paragraphs using your BULLETS like you did your above for those of us with neuro cognitive reading due to our illnesses. thanks.

your artcles are NOT user-friendly since you continue to have such LONG, continuous blocks of text for us neuro readers.

  4. Back in 1954 I obtained my first social secutrity card. I opined that if it is to last for the next 70 years possibly, I”d get laminated for long-term protection. The card worked well over the years for employment needs, military needs, etc. etc.

Then – in 2015, I applied for a Minnesota enhanced driver license because our inept MN legislature and executive branch decided to not comply with the new federal regulation regarding this.

Surprise, surprise! I am informed by the State of Minnesota that a laminated social security card is null and void for any purpose whatsoever.

    Thank you all very much.

      • Hot lamination makes the ink run. Cold lamination doesn’t but it would hide alterations. You are advised to never laminate your card. Also, novelty cards on metal are worthless.

        • Dear Ken & Martha:
It is printed on the back of mine that the SS card is not to be laminated, but no mention why.
I was glad to read the post on 2-1-’16 from John giving the reasons.

          • Good question, David. Lamination prevents detection of many security features. However, you may cover the card with plastic or other removable material if it does not damage the card. We suggest that you don’t carry your card with you, remember knowing the number is what’s important.

  5. Be patient Everyone We all going to get it just a matter of days I hope …Keep your Old one as long they Dont delay our Money That we Deserved . Thank you !

      • I don’t mind having to wait any time for a replacement PAPER card instead of SS having to go to the expense of more equipment just to be able to do it on-line.
I would prefer they KEEP THAT MONEY for people like me, since my latest SS statement says I will get $0.70 of every $1.00 I have put in.

  6. I provided my SS card when visiting an office and was told it had no importance. I don’t recall being asked for my card at any time since I became an adult.

    What good is it?

  7. I got my one & only SS card when I was 14 years old back in 1956. Back in the day it was not required to show your number to anyone as it is today. Aside from a little wrinkle here & there, as I am, it’s still in pretty good shape. I always knew you were not suppose to laminate it so a little plastic photo insert was used to protect it. You all have a great day now.

  8. You may also need your Social Security card if you are getting someone, especially volunteers such as Tax Aide, to do and e-file your tax return as social security no longer prints the full social security number on its forms.

  9. My SS card was issued in 1958. In NJ when I attempted to renew my DL, I was informed that my card was outdated and was not accepted as one of the required forms of ID. I was told to obtain one of the “New” SS cards. It was the second time of my life that the card was ever requested.

    • No, it is not illegal to make a photocopy of your own Social Security card. As a matter of fact, employers and some agencies may be required to photocopy and keep a copy of your Social Security card for record keeping purposes. Most times though, you don’t need to show your card, knowing your Social Security number is what’s important.

      • Please STAY WITH the paper copy and SAVE the extra expense for us tax payers that are only supposed to be getting $0.70 instead of every $1.00 we have put into the system, we DESERVE what we have put into the system.
        Please RESPOND to this post.
        Thanks in advance.

  10. I believe that it’s important to replace the Social Security Card to everybody, because the actually have the nine numbers of our Social Security Identification number, and this are our secret number. When we request medical services, they asked for our social security number, and take a photocopy of the card, and everybody in this services know it.
    Thanks.

    • We understand your concern, but we take protecting the public’s personal information very seriously. When you open a my Social Security account, we protect your information by using strict identity verification and security features. As a matter of fact, all of our online applications use an identity verification process to protect the privacy of your identity and your Social Security information. Using our online services is safe and secure.

  11. Excuse me everybody, in my anterior comment I wrote about the replace to the Medicare Card, that have the Social Security number complete. It’s dangerous in order to our preserver our identity, and avoid the thief of our private information in all medical offices.
    Thanks.

    • Hi Rudy, you can rest assured that we will continue our efforts to provide the public with world-class service. We plan to expand this service in more states later on. Stay tuned!

  12. I hope Indiana gets this service soon. It’s a lot more easy for us people up in age to go to our computer then go to the SSA office. It’s a lot more easy for everyone no matter what your age is.

    • Thanks for your feedback, Tom. We appreciate you doing business with us online. As stated before, we plan to add more states, so we encourage you to check with us later in the year!

  13. When will they have a different card for Medicare that does not have your SS number on it? Hard to keep number safe when you have to carry around all the time. Thank you.

  14. Good to know that our Government is developing a system to protect our identity, It concerns me to know that my SSN is all over the world, when I need assistance over the phone with some companies they transfer me to a third world country, The way things are now days it is Something to think about.
    Thank You

  15. I would think that your social security cards should have a picture I D as well as a 17 digit with Social Security numbers and letters also for Medicare cards as well this will refrain for someone to use that card to do any unlawful acts (fraud) ( misuses ) to anyone who has these..

  16. Hopefully the Medicare people in the government will be looking at this and decide to make the card more permanent. Most of us not on Medicare can’t appreciate how much it is used and shown.

  17. I was greatly impressed and also very grateful for the shortcut precluding a laborious trip to a field office until…I learned that it is not available in California, the most populous state in the union. Why?

    • Hi David. We plan to add more states in the future. We encourage you to check back with us later!

  18. I live in California and I like the idea to have a new-class SS card, which I’m going to need one for me and for my husband, how soon is it going to be available in this State?

  19. I do trust all of the concepts you have presented on your post. They’re really convincing and can definitely work. Still, the posts are very brief for starters. Could you please prolong them a bit from next time? Thanks for the post.
