Question:
What type of state-level data does NCES offer?

Response:
The selected publications and web sites listed below provide recent state-by-state information on achievement, attainment, demographics, enrollment, finances and teachers at the elementary, secondary, and postsecondary level. Other editions of these reports are available through our Publications & Products site.

Topics in the Digest include: the number of schools and colleges; teachers; enrollments; graduates; educational attainment; finances; federal funds for education; employment and income of graduates; libraries; technology; and international comparisons.
  • State Education Data Profiles
This web site allows users to search for and compare statewide information in elementary/secondary education, postsecondary education, and selected demographics for all states in the U.S.
  • State Education Reforms
This site, which draws primarily on data collected by organizations other than NCES, compiles and disseminates data on state-level education reform efforts in five areas: Accountability, Assessment and Standards, Staff Qualifications and Development, State Support for School Choice and Other Options, and Student Readiness and Progress through School.
  • National Assessment of Educational Progress: State Profiles

  • NAEP Data Explorer
With the NAEP Data Explorer (NDE) you can create statistical tables and graphics to help you find answers. Explore the results of decades of assessment of students' academic performance, as well as information about factors that may be related to their learning.

  • Common Core of Data (CCD) publications:

    • Overview of Public Elementary and Secondary Schools and Districts: The Overview gives state and national totals from the CCD School and Agency files. These totals include: schools and their characteristics (Type; Magnet, Charter, and Title I status; Urbanicity; Size), students, federal program participation (Free and Reduced Lunch, Migrant, English language learners, and Individual Education Programs), and district size.
    • Public School Student, Staff, and Graduate Counts by State: This report releases the CCD State Nonfiscal data. This includes state totals for students (totals and by race/ethnicity), graduates, and staff.
    • Revenues and Expenditures for Public Elementary and Secondary Education: This report releases the CCD State Fiscal data. This includes state totals for revenues by source and expenditures by function including current expenditures per pupil and instructional expenditures. Recent HTML versions contain tables that can be downloaded as Excel files.
  • Build a Table
