Worker Training Program

hazardous waste worker class

The Hazardous Waste Worker Training Program (HWWTP) is the core component of the NIEHS Worker Training Program (WTP). The HWWTP, through its awardees, provides model occupational safety and health training for workers who are or may be engaged in activities related to hazardous waste removal, containment, or chemical emergency response.

Committed to Protecting Workers and Their Communities

Since 1987, the HWWTP has developed a strong network of nonprofit organizations that deliver high-quality, peer-reviewed safety and health curriculum to hazardous waste workers and emergency responders in every region of the country. These courses have established national benchmarks for quality worker safety and health training, including a strong emphasis on peer instructors and hands-on instruction.

Training developed and administered under this program area includes topics such as:

  • Asbestos abatement
  • Confined space
  • Emergency response awareness
  • Hazardous materials transportation
  • Lead abatement
  • Underground storage tank removal
