PRIVACY STATEMENT

The Bureau of Land Management (BLM), National Park Service (NPS), U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service (FWS), and U.S. Forest Service (USFS) are committed to maintaining a web site that protects the individual's right to privacy. We do not require personal information from our visitors, nor do we collect any personally identifying information (name, email address, Social Security number, or other unique identifier) unless you knowingly provide it. Likewise, we do not give, sell, or transfer any personal information to a third party except as might be required by law.

If you fill out any forms on this web site, please know that this information will be used strictly as outlined (e.g., to be added to a mailing list for information, to receive visitor information, or to provide comments and feedback that will allow us to better serve you). While none of this information is of a sensitive nature, it will be closely controlled, will not be disseminated except as might be required by law, and will be erased when it no longer fulfills the purpose for which you intended. The one exception is when you provide public comments on a management plan or similar document during an official public comment period and where you intend for the comments to shape the management plan or our policies. These comments are likely to be subject to release in the event of an appeal or legal action related to the document.

Data Collection for Statistics

We collect no personal information about you when you visit our web site unless you choose to provide this information to us. However, to aid in web site management, certain nonpersonal information is collected and stored for statistical purposes. The FWS (where this web site is located) uses specialized software to create summary statistics, which are used for such purposes as assessing what information is of most and least interest to our customers, determining technical design specifications, and identifying system performance or problem areas.

What We Collect and Store Automatically

If you do nothing during your visit but browse through the web site, read pages, or download information, we will gather and store certain information about your visit automatically. This information does not identify you personally. We automatically collect and store only the following information about your visit:

We use the information we collect to measure the number of visitors to the different sections of our web site, allowing us to make our web site more useful and accessible to visitors. We do not store any personal identifiers.

Information Collected from E-mails and Forms

You may decide to send us personally identifying information through e-mail messages or through on-line forms. You may fill out a questionnaire or guestbook. Electronic communication allows us to collect information that will improve our web site for you, and we encourage it. We use personally identifying information from consumers in various ways to further our customer's protection, to provide better service, or to respond to your request. For example, we can correct broken links that you have identified or provide maps and brochures that you have requested. Before you send us information, though, there are a few things you should know.

The material you submit may be seen by various people within the FWS. Sometimes we forward your e-mail to other government employees or authorized concessioners who may be better able to help you. We may enter the information you send into our electronic database created for certain programs, such as a regulations commenting system that allows the public to comment on proposed regulations. This information may be used to determine how to better serve our public or obtain feedback on "what you want to see," "how we are doing," or obtain comments on draft policy. This information will not be shared with any other program or organization.

Any information that we collect via a questionnaire or a guestbook may be subject to disclosure, but will be handled in accordance with the requirements of the Privacy Act and the Freedom of Information Act to ensure the greatest protection of personal privacy in the face of any required disclosure.

Also, e-mail is not necessarily secure against interception. If your communication is very sensitive, or includes personal information like your bank account, charge card, or Social Security number, you might want to send it by postal mail instead.

Cookies

When you visit some web sites, their web servers generate pieces of information known as cookies. Some cookies collect personal information to recognize your computer in the future. This is not the case at www.rivers.gov, where we only use non-persistent cookies or "per-session cookies." Again, once you close your browser, the cookie disappears.

For Kids!

Please don't send us e-mail, especially if you are under 13. Instead, have an adult send the message. Have your parents, teachers and school librarian contact us if you need further assistance.
