SAMHSA’s Division of Evaluation, Analysis, and Quality assesses the impact of behavioral health programs, works to identify new prevention and treatment measures that reflect SAMHSA’s activities, and produces analytic and research publications to inform providers, policy makers, and programs about behavioral health and behavioral health services.

Health services research examines how people get access to health care, how much care costs, and what happens to patients as a result of this care. Health services research explores how social factors, financing systems and costs, organizational structures and processes, policies, technology, and personal behaviors affect access to treatment, the quality and cost of care, and quantity and quality of life.

Evaluation

SAMHSA has begun the process of developing more rigorous evaluation standards to address evaluations conducted both in-house and external to SAMHSA. To that end, the Quality, Evaluation, and Performance Branch’s Evaluation Desk Officers work closely with their CSAT, CSAP, and CMHS colleagues via the SAMHSA Evaluation Team (SET) to advise, conduct, collaborate, and coordinate on all evaluation and data collection activities that occur within SAMHSA.
