The NIH Big Data to Knowledge initiative (BD2K, https://datascience.nih.gov/bd2k) announces the release of two new RFAs for training in biomedical big data science:
- RFA-MD-16-002 NIH Big Data to Knowledge (BD2K) Enhancing Diversity in Biomedical Data Science (R25)
- RFA-ES-16-011 BD2K Research Education Curriculum Development: Data Science Overview for Biomedical Scientists (R25)
The purpose of the NIH BD2K Enhancing Diversity in Biomedical Data Science program is to provide resources for eligible institutions to implement innovative approaches to research education for diverse students in Big Data science. Through this program, eligible institutions will establish partnerships with institutions of international prominence in biomedical big data research. The collaborations will implement novel approaches of data science education that include 1) research experiences for undergraduates and the faculty who instruct them, and 2) curriculum development.
The purpose of the NIH BD2K Research Education Curriculum Development program is to facilitate community-driven development and implementation of data science curriculum for graduate students in the biomedical sciences. The FOA will support curriculum development activities at institutions interested in working collectively to define, develop, and test modules integrating data science into their existing biomedical science curriculum. Because the implementation of institutional curriculum changes will take the active support of the university administration and the commitment and cooperation of diverse departments, multi-PIs are encouraged in order to include expertise in the computational and quantitative sciences. To facilitate the integration of data science into biomedical curricula nationally, this FOA will support a cohort of institutions that will work collaboratively and collectively to produce curricular materials that are findable, accessible, interoperable, and reusable (FAIR).
The receipt deadline for applications for the Diversity FOA is November 12, 2016 and for the Curriculum Development FOA is December 7, 2016.
BD2K is a trans-NIH initiative that aims to support advances in data science, other quantitative sciences, policy, and training that are needed for the effective use of big data in biomedical research.
