NSF 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey Results

We are pleased to present the results from the 2016 Federal Employee Viewpoint Survey (FEVS). The 2016 FEVS results indicate that the foundation has again made solid progress in improving employee engagement, employee satisfaction, and diversity and inclusion. Highlights from NSF's 2016 FEVS results include:

  • NSF's scores on OPM's indices of Employee Engagement and Global Satisfaction both had meaningful increases from 2015. Scores on these two indices increased by three points each in 2016, and this increase continues our year-upon-year improvement.
    • NSF's 2016 score on Employee Engagement (73%) is eight points higher than the federal government average and eight percentage points higher than NSF scored in 2012.
    • NSF's 2016 score on Global Satisfaction (70%) is nine points higher than the federal government average and seven percentage points higher than NSF scored in 2012.
  • NSF's score on OPM's diversity and inclusion index, the NEW IQ, increased by two points in 2016 to 65%. This increase continues our year-over-year improvement in this area.
  • Satisfaction scores increased by three or more points on over 40% of the 71 questions in the survey.
  • NSF now ranks 8th among 37 large agencies in both Employee Engagement and Global Satisfaction Indices (up from 9th and 14th place in 2015, respectively).
  • Among the 24 CHCO agencies, NSF ranks 4th on Employee Engagement (behind only NASA, OMB, and NRC).
  • In 2016, NSF again had a high response rate to the FEVS at 74% for permanent staff and 71% for non-permanent staff. NSF's leadership appreciates employee participation in the survey and will continue to use their feedback to drive meaningful change at the Foundation.

The 2016 FEVS results also identify areas where NSF can continue to focus improvement efforts:

  • While scores on the NSF Workload index (FEVS items 9 & 10) improved from 2012 to 2015, the 2016 score of 53% remained the same as in 2015 and this score is lower than desired. We will continue to look for productive methods to address workload and resource challenges.

The 2016 FEVS results clearly indicate that NSF continues to make year-over-year improvements. As we approach 2017, we will continue to work hard to ensure that our progress in all of these areas continues and we address our challenge areas.
