US Department of Labor announces grant increment to continue re-employment assistance for workers laid off by Oregon company

WASHINGTON — The U.S. Department of Labor today announced a $165,000 National Emergency Grant increment to continue providing re-employment and training services to about 175 workers affected by the closure of Joe's Sports, Outdoor, Auto/Truck and More based in Wilsonville, Ore. The company, known as Joe's, supplied sporting goods, outdoor equipment, automotive supplies and general merchandise until it closed its corporate offices, distribution center and retail stores in 2009.

On March 18, 2010, the Labor Department awarded a grant for $1,137,425, with $863,865 released initially. Today's increment, awarded to the Oregon Department of Community Colleges and Workforce Development, brings the total funds awarded to date to $1,028,865. Additional funding will be made available as the state demonstrates a continued need for assistance.

National Emergency Grants are part of the secretary of labor's discretionary fund and are awarded based on a state's ability to meet specific guidelines. For more information, visit http://www.doleta.gov/NEG/.
