Panhandle Region

The Panhandle of Idaho boasts three of Idaho’s big lakes and fish-filled rivers. These northern waters are home to coldwater natives, such as Westslope cutthroat, rainbow, and bull trout, as well as tiger muskie, lake trout, kokanee, chinook, and bass. Nine of Idaho’s eleven big game animals can be found in North Idaho – white-tailed deer, elk, mountain goat, moose, bear, mountain lion, and wolves. The area is an outdoor enthusiasts playground.

As the snow piles up, we get reports from the public that deer and elk have come down from the mountains and are looking hungry. Some think feeding deer and elk will help the animals survive the rough winter months. They don’t understand why Fish and Game is reluctant to start a feeding program. But there are good reasons to be cautious about feeding wildlife.

Lake Cacade Ice Fishing Update: Jan. 19

Ice conditions had improved through yesterday with the slush freezing up with the below zero temperatures. However, we got another 12-14 inches of snow last night and this morning so we would expect more water and slush on the ice as the weight of the new snow pushes down on the ice, forcing water up through the cracks and holes. So beware, access conditions are or will soon be tough.

Fish and Game biologists in Idaho’s Panhandle region have started the fourth year of a comprehensive elk mortality study.
