ABOUT THE ODNI

The Director of National Intelligence serves as the head of the U.S. Intelligence Community, overseeing and directing the implementation of the National Intelligence Program and acting as the principal advisor to the President, the National Security Council, and the Homeland Security Council for intelligence matters related to national security. The Office of the DNI's goal is to effectively integrate foreign, military and domestic intelligence in defense of the homeland and of United States interests abroad.

ODNI is comprised of a headquarters element, four national centers (NCTC, the National Counterterroism Center; NCPC, the National Counterproliferation Center; NCSC, the National Counterintelligence and Security Center; and CTIIC, the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center) as well as the National Intelligence Council and IARPA, the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity.

APPLICATION PROCESS

All applicants must apply to a specific vacancy announcement. All applications must be submitted electronically.  ODNI makes employment decisions based on a fair and equitable competitive hiring process where applicants’ qualifications (education, professional experience, and skill set) are reviewed and evaluated. 

Once a candidate selection has been made, a secondary phase of ODNI’s hiring process is security processing.  All applicants will need to be prepared to undergo a thorough background investigation examining the applicant’s life history, character, trustworthiness, reliability, and soundness of judgment.  The ODNI utilizes polygraph examiners to conduct a polygraph exam on all employment candidates. Another phase of ODNI’s hiring process includes a thorough mental and physical medical examination in relation to performing essential job functions.

A career in intelligence can be enormously rewarding and also demanding. Not only is it required for intelligence professionals to be highly competent in their professional fields, ODNI employees must also be highly reliable, trustworthy, and possess a high level of personal integrity.

SECURITY CLEARANCE

Once an applicant has received an offer of employment and has successfully completed the security and medical processing, a security clearance may be granted. The clearance process is strictly governed by rules and regulations derived from Federal statute and executive orders. It involves a thorough examination of the applicant’s life history and ability to safeguard the nation’s secrets.  The clearance process can be lengthy - possibly taking up to four to six months. Individuals already cleared at the TS/SCI level may experience expedited security processing.
