Recycling

Reducing our impact requires big and small behavioral changes, from printing pages double-sided to separating metals during multi-million-dollar building projects.

In FY 2012, our overall recycling rate was 81 percent.

Recycling goals

Engaging in waste prevention and recycling activities are a key part of LANL's Site Sustainability Plan. We have recently established a process to reuse clean fill material on site, which will save millions of dollars each year by reducing the purchase, transport and disposal of clean fill.

Our progress

During the 2012 fiscal year, we diverted:

  • 47 percent of solid, non-hazardous waste (1275 metric tons of 2726 metric tons)
  • 93 percent of construction and demolition waste (6993 metric tons of 7480 metric tons)

Additionally, LANL construction and demolition activities produced 20,188 cubic yards of clean fill, of which 5300 cubic yards was reused on-site.  The remainder of clean fill is in controlled storage pending future needs.

Materials we recycle

LANL innovates recycling paths for various materials.

  • Aerosol cans
  • Asphalt
  • Batteries
  • Cardboard
  • Concrete
  • Light bulbs
  • Metal
  • Pallets
  • Paper
