Fire managers are taking advantage of winter conditions to burn slash piles created by multiple fuels reduction and hazardous tree removal projects. Firefighters will spend the fall, winter and spring burning piles in a number of locations across the Arapaho and Roosevelt National Forests.

Even when larger material can be removed during fuels treatment, limbs and smaller diameter material is often left behind, either because it is unusable or too costly to remove. The U.S. Forest Service burns piles of woody debris (slash) in an effort of reducing hazardous fuels. These piles are made from the slash left after mechanical thinning or cutting of trees in the forest has happened. Slash piles can range in size from 6'x6'x6' for piles stacked by hand to a minimum of 12'x12'x12' and often larger for piles created by machines.

These piles are only ignited under certain conditions, including weather, fuel moisture, smoke dispersal and staffing. The areas are monitored after burning is completed. When and where burning occurs depends on the conditions listed above. Public and firefighter safety is always the number one priority in burning operations.

Areas on the Sulphur Ranger District with hand and machine piles ready for burning are:

• The Arrow Fuels Project located near the east/southeast side of the Town of Winter Park, the north/northeast of Winter Park Resort, and Lakota Subdivision. (2,700 hand piles and 90 machine piles) [Started week of 11/28]
• The Winter Park Fuels/Upper Fraser Project located south and west of Winter Park and southwest of Fraser. (6,000 hand piles and 162 machine piles)
• The Blue Ridge Fuel Break Project is 2 miles west of Ninemile Mtn. and 3.25 miles west of Sheep Mtn. (7500 hand piles)
• The Jericho Road Fuels Project is northwest of Kamloop cove of Lake Granby or Granby Dam. (700 hand piles)
  
• The Trail Creek Fuels South Project is south of Rainbow Bay of Lake Granby. (450 hand piles) [Started week of 12/12]
• The Trail Creek Fuels North Project is 2.5 miles northwest of Fish Bay of Granby Lake. (5,200 hand piles) [Started week of 12/12]
• ANRA/ Supply Creek Fuels/ Kawuneeche Road South Project is 1.5 miles west of Trail Ridge Marina of Shadow Mtn. Lake. (60 machine piles and 3,000 hand piles)
• ANRA/ Supply of Creek Fuels/ Kawuneeche Road North Project is 1.5 miles northwest of Columbine Lake near the Supply Creek Trailhead area. (45 machine piles and 1,000 hand piles)
• The Willow Creek Fuels East Project is 0.25 miles east of Highway 125 near Forest Road 121 and Kauffman Creek area. (2,300 hand piles)
• The Willow Creek Fuels West Project is 1 mile west of Little King Reservoir. (200 hand piles)
• The Pass Creek Project is east of Highway 125 and West of Gravel and Little Gavel Mountains, along Forest Service roads 121,123, and 190. (308 machine piles)

Boulder, Gilpin and Clear Creek counties (near Boulder, Rollinsville, Nederland, Ward, Jamestown, Empire, Central City, Black Hawk)

• The Lump Gulch Project near Bobcat Trail, Lump Gulch Road, Glenmawr Drive, and Snowline Lake Subdivision. (84 acres of hand piles or approximately 850 piles) [COMPLETE]
  
• The Kelly Dahl Project 1 mile south/southeast of the junction of 119 and 72 or .25 miles south/southeast of the Kelly Dahl Campground. (85 machine piles) [20 piles remaining as of 1/11/17]
  
• The Front Range/ Forsythe Project half a mile east/northeast of County Rd. 97. (18 acres of hand piles or approximately 450 piles)
• The Sugarloaf 151 Project west/southwest of Nederland Fire Station 2 or 1 mile east of Barker Reservoir Dam. Includes Ridge Road area. (20 acres of hand piles or approximately 700 piles) [COMPLETE]
  
• The Sugarloaf 137 Project north of Cougar Run and west of Shady Hollow Road in the St. Anton subdivision. (22 small machine piles)
• The Sugarloaf 4 Project is 1.75 miles west of Gold Hill and along 5 miles of the Peak to Peak Highway on County Road 52. (19 acres of hand piles or approximately 475 piles)
• The James Creek RFB Project (Units 6,7,8) is a half mile south of Jamestown or quarter mile east of Bar K Ranch. (300 acres of hand piles or approximately 7500 piles)
• The James Creek RFB Project (unit 1) is 1.5 miles northwest of Jamestown and west of Count road 87. (32 acres of hand piles or approximately 800 piles)
• The James Creek RFB Project (Unit 17) is 0.5 miles north of Cal-Wood Ranch. (57 acres of hand piles or approximately 1425 piles)
• The James Creek M3202 Project is 1 mile east of Gold Lake Ranch and 2.5 miles southwest of Jamestown. (29 acres of hand piles or approximately 725 piles)
• The James Creek M1603 Project near the Ceran/St. Vrain trailhead and a quarter mile northwest of Bar-K Subdivision. (4 acres of hand piles or approximately 100 piles)
• The James Creek RFB (Unit 10) is 2 miles east of Peak to Peak Highway on Highway 52. (130 acres of hand piles or approximately 3,250 piles)
• The James Creek M3401 near Boulder Heights Subdivision and east of Peak View Road and Peak View Circle. ( 18 acres of hand piles or approximately 450 hand piles and 3 machine piles)
• The Gill Project is a quarter-mile south of Jamestown. (37 acres of hand piles or approximately 925 piles)
• The St. Vrain Project (unit 5) near Highway 7 and 72 Junction and .5 mile west of Raymond. (30 acres of piles or approximately 325 hand piles and 2 machine piles)
• The St. Vrain Project (units 13d, 14a, 14c) near Johnny Park Road or 82E and 1 mile west of Big elk Subdivision. (456 acres of hand piles or approximately 11,400 piles)
• The St. Vrain/ Mt. Taylor Project is 3 miles east of Allenspark. (20 acres of hand piles or approximately 500 piles)
• The Mad Creek Project immediately northwest of the town Empire and along Highway 40 corridor. (123 acres of hand piles or approximately 3,080 individual piles) [Complete!!]
  
• The Evergreen Project located at the Cub Creek trail and Highway 78.5 mile west/southwest. (8 acres of hand piles or approximately 200 piles)

Larimer County (near Red Feather Lakes and the Poudre Canyon)

• Magic Sky is located southeast of Red Feather Lakes between County Roads 74E and 68C. Crews will be burning hand piles and machine piles.
• 1,300 hand piles and 18 machine piles burned this winter
  
• Crown Point is located south of Rustic on Forest Road 139 near Salt Cabin Park. Crews will be burning machine piles.
