Our Customers

TVA’s customers fall into three individual groups:

Distributors

TVA works in partnership with 154 individual local power companies to keep safe, clean, reliable and affordable power flowing through the Tennessee Valley region. These local power companies, both municipal utilities and local cooperatives, purchase power from TVA and resell it to consumers in their designated service areas. Sales through local power companies account for approximately 90.3 percent of TVA’s total revenue. Click on the map below to see the full complement of TVA distributors.

The Tennessee Public Power Association, or TVPPA, is a nonprofit organization that represents the interests of consumer-owned electric utilities operating within the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) service area. TVPPA members include both municipal and electric cooperatives, and they serve more than 9 million customers in Alabama, Georgia, Tennessee, Mississippi, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia. TVPPA also provides TVA with suggestions and advice on existing and possible research and development projects and in many cases provides venues for demonstration research projects carried out in partnership with TVA.

Directly Served Customers

Fifty-two large, energy-intensive industrial customers count on TVA for a reliable stream of affordable power, as do seven federal installations. These directly served customers include producers of primary metals, chemicals, industrial gases, forest products and rolled aluminum products. Sales to these 59 directly served industrial customers account for about 8.4 percent of TVA’s revenue.

The Tennessee Valley Industrial Committee (TVIC) is an organization that comprises 35 of these directly served customers who operate 54 facilities in the TVA service area. They employ more than 30,000 people in the Tennessee Valley, predominantly in high-wage and salaried positions. TVIC members pay around $1.7 billion per year for electricity and have a vested interest in maintaining reliable, affordable power.

Off-System Customers

Twelve surrounding utilities buy power from TVA on the interchange market, accounting for 1.3 percent of TVA’s total revenue.
