Consumer Price Index

On a seasonally adjusted basis, the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.3 percent in December after rising 0.2 percent in November. The index for all items less food and energy rose 0.2 percent in December, the same increase as in November.

Employment Cost Index

Compensation costs increased 0.6 percent for civilian workers, seasonally adjusted, from June 2016 to September 2016. Over the year, compensation rose 2.3 percent, with wages and salaries up 2.4 percent and benefits up 2.3 percent.

Total nonfarm payroll employment rose by 156,000 in December, and the unemployment rate was little changed at 4.7 percent. Job growth occurred in health care and social assistance.

Producer Price Index 

The Producer Price Index for final demand increased 0.3 percent in December. Final demand prices advanced 0.4 percent in November and were unchanged in October. In December, the final demand goods index advanced 0.7 percent and prices for final demand services inched up 0.1 percent.

Productivity and Costs

Productivity increased 3.1 percent in the nonfarm business sector in the third quarter of 2016; unit labor costs increased 0.7 percent (seasonally adjusted annual rates). In manufacturing, productivity increased 0.4 percent and unit labor costs increased 3.3 percent.

Real Earnings

Real average hourly earnings increased 0.1 percent in December, seasonally adjusted. Average hourly earnings increased 0.4 percent, and CPI-U increased 0.3 percent. Real average weekly earnings increased 0.1 percent over the month.

U.S. Import and Export Price Indexes

Prices for U.S. imports rose 0.4 percent in December, after a 0.2-percent decline the previous month. The advance in December was primarily driven by higher fuel prices. U.S. export prices also advanced in December, rising 0.3 percent following a 0.1-percent decrease in November.
