On December 13, 2016, the National Governors Association (NGA) announced the selection of Kentucky, Oregon, Rhode Island, and Washington to participate in an NGA Center for Best Practices Policy Academy on Power Sector Modernization.  The goal of the project is to position states for long-term success as they seek to align market incentives with policy goals for a cleaner, more efficient and more resilient power sector.  Through the Power Sector Modernization Policy Academy, which is supported, in part, by the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability Electricity’s (OE) Policy Technical Assistance Program, state teams will design action plans around issues such as fostering grid modernization, resiliency, and environmental stewardship.  The four selected states will address those challenges, learning how to effectively navigate the power sector’s transformation.

NGA policy academies provide a technical assistance opportunity for a small group of state teams to develop and implement strategies for addressing complex public policy challenges. The policy academy process and lessons learned from it are also intended to serve as resources for other states addressing similar challenges.

More information about how OE's Electricity Policy Technical Assistance Program can help states with their electricity policies is available HERE. More information about DOE's Grid Modernization Initiative (GMI) is available HERE. GMI represents a DOE-wide collaboration, with primary funding support coming from the Office of Electricity Delivery and Energy Reliability and Office of Energy Efficiency and Renewable Energy, and the Office of Energy Policy and Systems Analysis.  DOE National Laboratories are participating across GMI’s technology areas in a coordinated strategic partnership called the Grid Modernization Lab Consortium (GMLC).
