VIRTUAL LIBRARY

Important notice about the NCJRS Virtual Library collection!

On October 1, 2014, the NCJRS Virtual Library began to focus primarily on the collection of informational materials and resources produced, funded, and/or sponsored by the bureaus and offices of the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Justice Programs (OJP). All materials housed in the NCJRS Virtual Library prior to October 2014 will remain searchable in the Abstracts Database and accessible through Virtual Library services. Due in part to these changes, NCJRS will be expanding the scope of the Virtual Library in other areas, including collaborative efforts with public and private libraries, consortia, and repositories designed to increase and expand access to both published and unpublished criminal justice information.

Virtual Library Overview

The NCJRS Virtual Library houses all the resources presented in the NCJRS Abstracts Database. As of October, 2014, the Virtual Library’s primary purpose is to serve as an archive and access repository for OJP information and knowledge resources. In this role the Virtual Library collects, preserves, and provides public access to all resources produced and/or sponsored/funded by OJP, as well as derivative works such as journal articles and grey literature. However, materials collected and housed in the Virtual Library prior to October 2014 remain publically available. These resources, including Federal, State, and local government reports, books, research reports, journal articles, and unpublished research, comprehensively cover criminal justice, juvenile justice, and drug issue topics. Consisting of more than 220,000 documents, the collection remains one of the largest criminal justice information repositories in the world and is used heavily by researchers, practitioners, and policy makers.

Location

The NCJRS Virtual Library is located in Gaithersburg, Maryland, approximately 20 miles northwest of Washington, DC. The Virtual Library is not open to the public; however, Virtual Library staff are available to respond to all questions, comments, and suggestions.
