Each month the Current Employment Statistics program surveys about 146,000 businesses and government agencies, representing approximately 623,000 individual worksites, in order to provide detailed industry data on employment, hours, and earnings of workers on nonfarm payrolls for all 50 States, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and about 450 metropolitan areas and divisions.

Announcements

  • NEW BLS recently discovered errors in metropolitan area and division hours and earnings series. Data for the affected series have been suppressed from October 2012 through November 2016. A detailed list of the suppressions is available at www.bls.gov/sae/saesup2016.htm.
  • NEW Effective with the release of the January 2017 data on March 13, 2017, CES State and Area will begin publishing improved sample variance estimates through the use of Generalized Variance Functions. Current measures of variance can be found at www.bls.gov/sae/790stderr.htm.

  • The State Employment and Unemployment data for January 2017 are scheduled to be released on March 13, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.
  • The Metropolitan Area Employment and Unemployment data for December 2016 are scheduled to be released on February 1, 2017, at 10:00 A.M. Eastern Time.

Jobless rates were lower in November than a year earlier in 271 of the 387 metropolitan areas, higher in 90, and unchanged in 26. Nonfarm payroll employment was up in 303 metropolitan areas over the year, down in 73, and unchanged in 11.

Dec. jobless rates down in 10 states, up in 1; payroll jobs down in 5 states, up in 3

In December, unemployment rates were significantly lower in 10 states, higher in 1 state, and stable in 39 states and the District of Columbia. Nonfarm payroll employment decreased in 5 states, increased in 3 states, and was essentially unchanged in 42 states and the District.
