Impact
Our Communities
NIH funds research in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. In 2011, this research supported hundreds of thousands of jobs at more than 2,500 universities, hospitals, non-profit research institutions, and small businesses in our communities.
In addition to directly supporting research, NIH funding spurs an impressive amount of spin-off economic growth in our communities, ranging from scientific equipment suppliers to biotech firms to businesses offering food and lodging.
In fact, a report from United Medical Research (UMR) estimates that research supported by NIH generated $62 billion in new economic activity in 2011—more than double the taxpayers’ investment. UMR also found that 17 of the 30 fastest-growing occupations involve health research or health care.
