The FMLA is intended to allow employees to balance their work and family life by taking reasonable unpaid leave for certain family and medical reasons. The FMLA allows eligible employees of covered employers to take unpaid, job-protected leave for up to a total of 12 workweeks in any 12 months for certain family and medical reasons and up to 26 workweeks in a single 12-month period to care for a covered servicemember with a serious injury or illness.

It is important to remember that the FMLA's entitlements apply only to eligible employees of covered employers. If you have not yet determined employee eligibility and employer coverage, first do so by going to Coverage and Eligibility.
