This report presents findings about violent crime and property crime experienced by the Asian, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander population in the United States. |
Abstract:
Data on nonfatal violent victimization (rape/sexual assault, robbery, aggravated and simple assault) and nonfatal property victimization (burglary, motor vehicle theft, and theft) are drawn from the National Crime Victimization Survey. Data on homicides are drawn from the FBI’s Uniform Crime Reporting Program’s Supplementary Homicide Reports. Comparisons are made using the victimization experiences of other racial and ethnic groups. Findings include violent victimization rates by victim characteristics and property victimization rates by household characteristics. Crime characteristics (weapon use, victim injuries, and police reporting) and trends in violent and property victimization are also discussed. Highlights include the following: 1) from 2002 through 2006, the average annual rate of nonfatal violent victimization against Asians was about 11 violent victimizations per 1,000 persons age 12 or older, compared to 24 per 1,000 persons for non-Asians; 2) among males and females, Asians were less likely than non-Asians to be victims of violent crime between 2002 and 2006; and 3) from 2002 through 2006, 77 percent of violent crimes against Asian males and about half of violent crimes against Asian females were committed by strangers. 9 tables and 4 figures |
