AREAS OF CRITICAL ENVIRONMENTAL CONCERN

Public scoping for the Tres Rios Field Office Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (ACEC) Resource Management Plan (RMP) Amendment ran from March 3, 2106 through May 3, 2016. Thank you to everyone who participated. The purpose of public scoping is to determine relevant issues that will influence the scope of the environmental analysis, including alternatives, and guide the planning process.

The BLM is preparing an RMP Amendment and associated Environmental Assessment (DOI-BLM-CO-S010-2016-0018-EA) for the Tres Rios Field Office in order to evaluate and consider management prescriptions for 18 Areas of Critical Environmental Concern (commonly known as ACECs) nominated during scoping for the Tres Rios Field Office RMP (approved in February 2015).   ACECs are public lands where special management is required in order to protect the area's values.  To be eligible for designation as an ACEC, an area must meet criteria for both relevance and importance. An ACEC possesses significant historic, cultural, or scenic values, fish or wildlife resources (including habitat, communities, or species), natural processes or systems, or natural hazards.  The significance of these values and resources must be substantial in order to satisfy the importance criteria.   The planning area is located in Dolores, Montezuma, Montrose, San Juan, and San Miguel counties in southwest Colorado and encompasses approximately 130,000 acres of Federal surface public land.  The BLM is considering whether to amend the Tres Rios RMP to address 18 areas found to have relevance and importance consistent with BLM Manual 1613 – Areas of Critical Environmental Concern.
