An asteroid splashing down in one of Earth’s oceans could inject billions of tons of water into the atmosphere, but the risk of a catastrophic tsunami is actually relatively small. Happy #nationalhydrogenday! We're celebrating with a special episode of #ScienceIn60 all about #hydrogen #fuelcells! Fuel cells have long been one of the most tantalizing clean-energy solutions. They offer electricity from an abundant energy source—hydrogen. Compared to internal combustion engines, fuel cells are more than twice as efficient at converting fuel to power, but are currently dependent on costly platinum. Rod Borup and his team at Los Alamos National Lab are leading efforts to reduce the cost of fuel cells and are exploring alternatives that could eliminate platinum all together. #energy #alternativeenergy @energy

In addition to working in one of the world's best nanoscale #researchfacility, the two things I will miss the most about Los Alamos are Ashley Pond and White Rock Overlook. Ashley Pond has been my daily hideout in the evenings. It was amazing to visit White Rock Overlook every weekend for #hiking and watching the #sunset. It would be hard to forget the soothing sound of #riogrande breaking the deep silence as it flows through the gorgeous canyons.
I am standing in front of the trendy main entrance of the Center for Integrated Nanotechnologies (CINT) building. The center is a DOE national user facility where researchers can submit proposals for collaborating with CINT #scientists and using the instruments. CINT hosts really cool stuff for doing state-of-the-art #nanoscience #research. #dayinthelife #lifeatlanl

This is a confocal #microscope system powered with a pulsed #laser to measure the #visibleradiation emitted by nanocrystals. The microscope is connected to a detector which is capable of counting ‘single’ #photons. Cool stuff, isn’t it? #dayinthelife #lifeatlanl
