DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

Jackie manages and implements safety programs that follow all local, state and federal regulations, such as: Chemical hygiene, Hazardous Communication, Waste Minimization Program, Environmental Management, Industrial Hygiene, Workers Compensation, Occupational Medical Surveillance, Security, and Emergency Action Plan. She performs and coordinates various safety training for all permanent, temporary, visiting scientists/technicians and other visitors that work at the laboratory. Safety training covers various aspects of lab, chemical, field, machinery, ergonomics, emergency response, fire safety and environmental management that pertain to the type of activities being performed so that no harm comes to the employee or the environment. Jackie also coordinates special guest speakers to train employees as needed. She regularly attends annual safety and environmental topics to keep her abreast with all local, state and federal regulations. She has gained an abundance of knowledge in the Safety world over the past 14 years with the USDA-ARS-NPARL.

Jackie is active with Sidney Local Emergency Planning Committee (LEPC). She regularly coordinates special "walk throughs" of the NPARL facilities for Emergency Responders in the Sidney community to keep responders aware of the hazards and layout of location to facilitate quicker and more appropriate responses to any emergency on the site.

 

EXPERIENCE

Jackie joined USDA-ARS-NPARL the summer of 1993 as a temporary employee. She attended college that fall and spring, and received her college degree in the spring of 1994. In the summer of 1994 Jackie was given a permanent position as biological science technician, and later in 1994 she was appointed the safety responsibility as a collateral duty. She was appointed to the full time Safety Specialist position in the fall of 1996. In 2004, helped organized the first Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) training for Richland County. In 2005, initiated and organized the first Electronic Waste Recycling event that was titled "Erase your E-waste", with assistance from NPARL Information specialist Beth Redlin, LEPC, E-waste committee, CERT and RSVP. Erase your E-waste event is held annually by E-waste Committee to which Jackie is chairperson of the committee.

 

AWARDS

Jackie received the "2001 NPA Award of Excellence - Safety, Health and Environmental Award"  for her outstanding dedication and hard work. And in 2006, Jackie received the nationwide Administrative and Financial Management (AFM) Support Award for Excellence. The Bronze Award for Excellence was given in recognition for her tireless support of Executive Order 13148 - Greening the Government through Leadership in Environmental Management and ARS' Environmental Management Program.
