Fifth Lost Promise Candlelight Vigil

The DEA Museum and the DEA Educational Foundation co-hosted the 5th Lost Promise Candlelight Vigil on Wednesday, May 28 at the Maryland Science Center in Baltimore, Maryland. The “Vigil for Lost Promise” is a remembrance of those who have died from the use of drugs. It reinforces the work law enforcement and prevention education does to help shield others from the tragedy caused by drug abuse.

The event was coordinated with DEA’s traveling exhibit, Target America, showing through September 1st at the Maryland Science Center. Sponsors for the Vigil include the U.S. Health & Human Services, Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA), Baltimore City Mayor Stephanie Rawlings-Blake, the Maryland Science Center, and WBAL-TV 11.

The Vigil was well attended by Maryland residents, youth, members of DEA’s Washington Field Office and the Baltimore District Office, and members of the Target America Exhibit committee. Participants and community leaders had the opportunity to make brief remarks, including the Washington Field Office’s Special Agent in Charge, Karl Colder. Prevention educators also provided deep-felt testimonials about their work and their own personal experiences with losing loved ones to drug abuse. The event concluded outside the Maryland Science Center, where participants with lighted candles gathered to walk in a processional around Baltimore’s Inner Harbor Promenade. The processional ended at the Target America Exhibit. Attendees were encouraged to add their loved one’s names to the exhibit’s “Wall of Lost Talent”. The additional names will remain on the wall through the end of the exhibition at the Maryland Science Center and will be kept through the exhibit’s next showing.
