A
Plan to Prevent and Control Diabetes in Texas, 2010-2011
The Texas Diabetes Council’s Plan to Prevent and Control Diabetes
in Texas endorses a comprehensive approach to diabetes over the upcoming
biennium (2010-2011), and beyond. In preparing its latest plan, the TDC
reviewed state projections of diabetes prevalence and burden for the next
forty years. Diabetes systems dynamics modeling tools developed by the
Centers for Disease Control and Prevention provided new insight into how
clinical, lifestyle, and health policy interventions can offer a cumulative
effect in reducing the health and economic burden of diabetes in Texas.

“Love
your Kidneys” Campaign Urges Texans at Risk
to Get Tested for Kidney Disease
The Texas Department of State Health Services (DSHS) and
the Texas Renal Coalition are sending an urgent message to Texans at
risk for end-stage renal disease (ESRD): “If
you have high blood pressure, diabetes or a family history of kidney
problems, you need to get tested for kidney disease.”
The “Love
your Kidneys” campaign encourages
Texans to get tested
and “show
a little love for their kidneys.” Diabetes and high blood pressure
are the leading causes of kidney failure. Early
stages of kidney disease have no symptoms. If left undetected,
it can progress to kidney failure with little or no warning, requiring
dialysis or a transplant.
Health care professionals can help save kidney function by visiting savekidneys.com for testing
and treatment information from trusted sources such as the National Kidney
Disease Education Program and the National Kidney Foundation.

Texas Diabetes Public Health System Assessment
In January 2003, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, Division
of Diabetes Translation, directed CDC-sponsored state Diabetes Prevention
and Control Programs to undertake a comprehensive assessment of the collective
performance of their state diabetes public health systems. The basic framework
for this assessment was the National Public Health Performance Standards
developed by the CDC, in collaboration with six national public health
organizations, during the period 1998-2002.
