Review of Modeling Approaches in Support of Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management

Northeast Fisheries Science Center, Woods Hole, MA 02543
March 29-31 2011

An independent peer-review of modeling approaches in support of Ecosystem-Based Fishery Management (EBFM) on the Northeast U.S. Continental Shelf was conducted in Woods Hole on March 29-31, 2011 under the auspices of the Center for Independent Experts. The purpose of this review was to evaluate the appropriateness and performance characteristics of community-level and ecosystem models being considered at the Northeast Fisheries Science Center (NEFSC) as potential operating models for EBFM in the region. The signing of an Executive Order in July 2010 implementing a new National Ocean Policy (NOP) has recently elevated the importance of this issue. The NOP designates Ecosystem-Based Management as the guiding principle in ocean resource management for the nation.
