American Community Survey 5-Year Estimates — Geodatabase Format

2010 - 2014 Detailed Tables

These geodatabases bring together geography from the 2014 TIGER/Line Shapefiles and data from the 2010-2014 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates.

Data are available for the United States and some data sets are available for Puerto Rico.

In each geodatabase is a metadata table with a short name and a full description of each data element. The short names in the metadata file correspond to the data element field headings in the detailed tables of each geodatabase. These metadata tables can be difficult to read in a GIS, and are provided here as text files:

Additional metadata include the 2014 TIGER/Line Shapefiles Technical Documentation [PDF] and the 2010-2014 American Community Survey Core Technical Documentation [PDF]. The ACS 2014 5YR Appendices [XLS] workbook provides information on ACS data geographic restrictions for all levels of geography (block group, census tract, etc).

Joining topic tables to the feature class table:
You can join topic table data to feature class data based on a common field. The common field in a topic table is titled "GEOID", whereas the common field in each feature class table is "GEOID_Data".

2009 - 2013 Detailed Tables

These geodatabases bring together geography from the 2013 TIGER/Line Shapefiles and the 2009-2013 American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates data.

Data are available for the United States and Puerto Rico. Not all tables are available for Puerto Rico.

Each geodatabase contains a metadata file with a short name and a full description of each data element. The short names in the metadata file correspond to the data element field headings in the detailed tables of each geodatabase. Full descriptions in the metadata table are incomplete if they surpass the 255-character limit for geodatabase tables. You can access text versions of these metadata files, which contain short names and full descriptions for all data elements, including those over 255-characters below:

General Metadata [TXT] - This file applies to the following geographies: American Indian Areas, Census Tracts, Congressional Districts, Core Based Statistical Areas, County Subdivisions, Public Use Microdata Areas, School Districts, State Legislative Districts, Urban Areas and ZIP Code Tabulation Areas.

These geodatabases join geography from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles to the 2008-2012 American Community Survey 5-year estimates.

The block group geodatabases contain all of the data available at the block group level according to the 2008-2012 American Community Survey 5-year estimates technical documentation [PDF] with the exception of the tables ending in A-I (e.g. includes B01001 - Sex by Age but not table B01001A - Sex by Age White Alone). The other geodatabases contain all of the data available for sub-state geographies with the exception of the tables ending in A-I.

In each geodatabase is a metadata file with a short name and a full description of each cell. The attribute table for each geodatabase contains the short names for each data element. Additional metadata for the geography can be found in the 2012 TIGER/Line Shapefiles technical documentation [PDF] and the 2008-2012 American Community Survey 5-year estimates technical documentation [PDF].

These geodatabases were created using ArcGIS 10.1.

2007 - 2011 Block Group Data

These geodatabases join the block group geography from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles to the 2007-2011 American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 70 tables.

2007 - 2011 Data Profiles

These geodatabases join the geography from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles to the 2007-2011 American Community Survey 5-year estimates Data Profiles:

Data are available for the United States and Puerto Rico.

These geodatabases were created using the Data Profiles from American FactFinder (see sample here). These data profiles generally have four entries for each variable – the estimate, the margin of error for the estimate, the percent of the total universe, and margin of error for the percent. On the total lines, instead of showing a percent and percent margin of error, the estimate is repeated in the percent column and there is no percent margin of error.

These files lack metadata.  Metadata for the geography can be found in the 2011 TIGER/Line Shapefiles.  There is a table in the geodatabase with metadata for the Demographic Profiles including the short name and full description. The attribute table for each shapefile contains the short names for each data element.

These geodatabases were created using ArcGIS 10.1.

2006 - 2010 Block Group Data

These geodatabases join the block group geography from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles to the 2006-2010 American Community Survey 5-year estimates for 69 tables.

2010 Census

Demographic Profile 1 — Shapefile Format

These national level shapefiles join the geometry and selected attributes from the 2010 Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles and the 2010 Census Summary File 1 Demographic Profile (DP1) for the United States and Puerto Rico. They contain data items such as total population, total housing units, median age, population 16 years and over, population 65 years and over, race, relationship, average household size, and many others. All files are zipped.

These files lack metadata.  Metadata for the shapefiles can be found in the 2010 Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles.  There is an MS Excel file in each zip file that relates the short data table name of the demographic profile data element to its full name. For example, "DP0010001" is the short name for the data table containing total population. The attribute table for each shapefile contains the short names for each data element.

Demographic Profile 1 — Geodatabase Format

These national level shapefiles join the geometry and selected attributes from the 2010 Census TIGER/Line Shapefiles and the 2010 Census Summary File 1 Demographic Profile (DP1) for the United States and Puerto Rico. They contain data items such as total population, total housing units, median age, population 16 years and over, population 65 years and over, race, relationship, average household size, and many others. All files are zipped.

Island Areas Demographic Profiles - Geodatabase Format

These Island Area geodatabases join the geometry and attributes from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles and the 2010 Census Summary File 1-4 Demographic Profile (DP1-4) for American Samoa, the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands, Guam, and the U.S. Virgin Islands. Currently data are available for county subdivisions only.

Inside the geodatabase are separate layers and separate metadata files for each Island Area.

These state based files have the population and housing unit count by block from the 2010 Census. These files are available for the 50 states and the District of Columbia only.

 

County Business Patterns — Geodatabase Format

These geodatabases relate geography from the TIGER/Line Shapefiles with 2012 County Business Patterns Data.

In each compressed folder is a geodatabase and a record layout text file with a short name and a full description of each cell.

In each geodatabase is a TIGER/Line feature class, a complete 2012 County Business Patterns (CBP) table (by geography) and a North American Industry Classification System (NAICS) Descriptions table. Additional metadata for the geography can be found in the 2012 TIGER/Line Shapefiles technical documentation [PDF] and on the County Business Patterns webpage.
