Pollution Prevention in Healthcare Facilities

The NHPPP works with healthcare facilities of all types to create a healthy environment for patrons and employees. Since 2001, the NHPPP, in partnership with the New Hampshire Hospital Association Foundation for Healthy Communities, has coordinated the NH Hospitals for a Healthy Environment, which meets quarterly to discuss waste reduction opportunities, environmental compliance improvements, and environmentally preferable purchasing options. This model has been implemented in hospitals and all healthcare facilities across the country. Through the efforts of NHPPP, it has been estimated that almost 600 pounds of mercury has been removed from New Hampshire healthcare facilities.

The efforts of the NHPPP were recognized in 2006 with the Hospitals for a Healthy Environment (H2E) Champion for Change Award for the second year in a row. The award recognizes the NHPPP for its continued efforts to help eliminate mercury use and promote the reduction of waste at health care facilities.
