Threatened and Endangered Species
To conserve, enhance, and protect endangered and threatened species and the ecosystems upon which they depend in
New Mexico through cooperation with other agencies and the people of the State.
Threatened means that a species is likely to become endangered if it is not protected.
Endangered means that a species is in immediate danger of becoming extinct and needs protection to survive.
Plants and animals become threatened or endangered due to:
- Loss of home or habitat
- Illegal or unregulated hunting or collection
- Competition with other, non-native species
- Pollution
