U.S. Department of Energy Grand Junction Office Listed on National Register of Historic Places

Grand Junction, Colorado – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) Grand Junction Office (GJO) is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places in recognition of its important, historical roles in the Manhattan Project and the Cold War.

DOE still occupies part of the complex of buildings at 2591 Legacy Way on Orchard Mesa now owned by Riverview Technology Corporation. The listed site is a portion of the original 55.7-acre gravel mine purchased by the U.S. government in 1943 for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Manhattan Engineer District.

Weapons to Wetlands: A Decade of Difference

CINCINNATI, Ohio – The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) will host a special event marking the 10th anniversary of the Fernald remediation on Saturday, October 29, 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. at the Fernald Preserve Visitors Center, 7400 Willey Road, Hamilton, OH, 45013.  Please join us on the footprint of this former uranium production plant as workers, neighbors, regulators, activist groups, contractors, and DOE come together again to celebrate the tremendous effort and spirit of cooperation that made the massive cleanup of the site a success.

Notice of Availability for Explanation of Significant Differences for the Rocky Flats Corrective Action Decision/Record of Decision Central Operable Unit

The U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) announces the availability of an Explanation of Significant Differences (ESD) for review. The ESD describes change in the location of the treatment of the Mound Site Plume from the Mound Site Plume Treatment System to the East Trenches Site Plume Treatment System air stripper. The ESD provides website references to the site history and the selected remedy and information on the proposed adjustment to the remedy for changing the treatment location of the groundwater intercepted from the Mound Site Plume.

Notice of Rocky Flats CERCLA Five-Year Review

The U.S. Department of Energy Office of Legacy Management is conducting the fourth Five-Year Review of the Comprehensive Environmental Response, Compensation, and Liability Act (CERCLA) remedy for the Central Operable Unit (COU) at the Rocky Flats Site. The purpose of the review is to ensure the CERCLA remedy remains protective of human health and the environment. The remedy for the COU consists of institutional and physical controls, incorporating continued monitoring and maintenance. This Five-Year Review report is required to be completed in August 2017.

The U.S. Department of Energy today announced the availability of the Amchitka Island, Alaska, Biological Monitoring Report 2011 Sampling Results for the Amchitka, Alaska, site. The report provides the results of terrestrial and marine sampling in the areas surrounding Amchitka and Adak Islands in 2011.
